Abstract:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

The rapid proliferation of propaganda content on the digital medium has become a growing concern for governments and civil societies all over the world due to the adverse impact of such content. For instance, malicious online users are using various propaganda techniques to pose serious threats to democracy, journalism, health, economy, and climate change. In addition, people use social media platforms to rapidly spread propaganda in the form of rumors, sectarian hatred, defaming content, and even blasphemous content. In order to exacerbate the damages, such content is coupled with visual propaganda in the form of images and videos.<\/span>
In this presentation, we will explore the various types of misinformation and propaganda that proliferate across digital platforms. We will examine the different forms these deceptive practices take, ranging from false information and misleading narratives to targeted disinformation campaigns and manipulative content. Next, we will delve into the automated techniques and technologies used to detect online propaganda. We will also highlight the unique challenges of detecting automated versus human-generated misinformation and discuss how artificial intelligence is evolving to meet these challenges. Additionally, we will investigate the characteristics and methodologies used to identify individuals or groups who are deliberately spreading propaganda. Finally, we will focus on multimodal propaganda\u2014content that combines text and images to create more persuasive and harder-to-detect disinformation. We will explore the unique features of this type of propaganda, the techniques used to manipulate audiences through visual and textual elements, and the innovative strategies being developed to detect and combat this growing threat.<\/span><\/p>

Biography:<\/span><\/p>

MUHAMMAD AMIR MEHMOOD received the Ph.D. degree in engineering from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Deutsche Telekom Innovation Laboratories (T-Labs), Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin), in 2012. He worked as an Assistant Professor and later as an Associate Professor at the Al-Khawarizmi Institute of Computer Science, University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore, Pakistan, from 2012 to 2024. During his tenure at KICS, UET, he led the High-Performance Computing and Networking Laboratory (HPCNL) and established the Language Engineering Laboratory at the National Center in Big Data and Cloud Computing (NCBC), Pakistan. He is currently working as an Associate Professor with the Faculty of Computer and Information Systems (FCIS), Islamic University of Madinah, Saudi Arabia.
