Abstract:
This talk explores the integral role of artificial intelligence in reshaping healthcare, with a focus on both current implementations and prospects. Through diverse case studies — ranging from skin lesion detection and DNA profiling to managing healthcare during COVID-19 through data analysis — we illustrate AI’s transformative impact. We discuss real-world applications including detecting diseases through social media in Saudi Arabia and developing cloud and edge-enabled healthcare systems. The discussion extends to tackling psychological health issues and education challenges during the pandemic. Conclusively, we will discuss healthcare challenges, trends, and the future, exploring emerging trends such as precision medicine, digital health, and healthcare interoperability, while addressing regulatory and ethical considerations and the increasing importance of global health initiatives. We emphasize the future landscape of AI in healthcare, highlighting the critical role of sustainable healthcare practices, advancements in regenerative medicine, and the need for effective patient empowerment and engagement strategies, particularly in addressing the challenges of an aging population.
Biography:
Rashid Mehmood is a Professor of High Performance Data Analytics at the Islamic University of Madinah, Saudi Arabia, and the Director of the Centre for Technology Governance. He has obtained qualifications and work experience from universities including Cambridge and Oxford Universities. Rashid has 28 years of experience in computational modeling, simulations, and design using artificial intelligence, big data, high-performance computing (HPC), and distributed systems. His broad research goal is to develop multi-disciplinary science and technology to enhance the quality of life and foster a smart economy, with a focus on real-time intelligence and autonomous system management. He has authored over 200 research papers, including 10 edited books, and has organized and chaired international conferences and workshops in areas including vehicular communication, healthcare, transportation, smart cities and societies, and HPC. Rashid has led and contributed to academia-industry collaborative projects funded by EPSRC, EU, UK regional funds, Technology Strategy Board UK, and Saudi Arabia, with a total value exceeding £50 million.
